In the Name of Peace
Winter nights we gathered
In cold and dark and rain,
Striving to keep alight
The flickering flames we shielded,
Singing in the streets
In the name of peace.
Each time those little lights
Lost their battle with the rain,
We relit them from each other
And smiled an affirmation
Of our determination
To make peace a celebration;
Keep burning the inner light
On this dark threshold we recognised.
Easier now to slumber in leafless winter,
Betray the dream we then believed in.
Now a state of war's established
What's the point in standing
In cold and dark and rain,
Singing in the streets,
In the name of peace?
May the light in me survive,
Like those flickering flames
We shared out between us,
Holding hope collectively
Against individual despair.
We were there.
We were there.
May we stand again together.
In cold and dark and rain,
Singing in the streets
In the name of peace.
